How electricity has changed in the Dominican Republic: renewables are 33.74 of every 100 megawatts of installed capacity in 2024, up from 18.63 in 2014; solar went from 0 to 949 MW

Installed electricity generation capacity in the Dominican Republic was 5,985.35 megawatts (MW) in 2024, according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) with data from the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE). Renewable sources (hydro, wind, solar and biomass) accounted for 2,019.41 MW, or 33.74 of every 100 MW, up from 18.63 in 2014, according to Economía con Datos calculations with the source's data. Solar, absent in 2014, reached 949.08 MW.

CEPAL publishes in CEPALSTAT, with data from OLADE's Energy Information System of Latin America and the Caribbean (SIELAC), the installed electricity generation capacity by source of the Dominican Republic from 2000 to 2024. In 2024 total capacity was 5,985.35 MW, up 2,222.58 MW (59.07 %) from 3,762.77 MW in 2014.

Out of every 100 megawatts

Renewable sources (hydro, wind, solar and biomass) added up to 2,019.41 MW in 2024: 33.74 of every 100 MW installed, compared with 701.17 MW and 18.63 of every 100 in 2014. Non-renewable thermal capacity (fuel oil, natural gas and coal) fell from 81.37 to 66.26 of every 100 MW, although it grew in megawatts, from 3,061.60 to 3,965.94 MW. Of the 2,222.58 MW added between 2014 and 2024, 1,318.24 MW (59.31 %) were renewable.

Source by source

Solar first appears in 2016 with 30.00 MW and reached 949.08 MW in 2024, 274.00 MW more than in 2023. Wind rose from 85.45 MW in 2014 to 417.05 MW in 2024. Hydro barely changed (615.72 MW to 623.28 MW). In 2004 total capacity was 3,245.43 MW, with 16.72 of every 100 MW renewable, all of it hydro. Electricity consumption, from the same source, was 24,466.8 GWh in 2024, 70.96 % more than in 2014 (14,311.8 GWh).

Installed capacity measures how much the plants can produce at once, not how much they actually generate; sun and wind do not produce at every hour, so the renewable share of generation differs from the renewable share of capacity. Percentages and differences are Economía con Datos calculations with the source's data.
